Are you in the market for a new flat screen television? Maybe your old TV has finally stopped working or perhaps you just decided it is time to upgrade. The first thing you need to know is that flat screen TVs come in three different types: Plasma, LCD and LED. You may not be able to see much of a difference between the three from the outside (when not switched on), but inside they all work very differently.
A fluorescent lighting system is used to illuminate the screen in both LCD and Plasma style flat screen TVs. Sometimes the light produced by these tubes shines around the diodes present inside, because of this the screen has trouble producing dark black colors in the on-screen image. The dark gray coloring that results makes the picture appear fuzzy and muddled to the viewer. For some consumers this is an annoying problem.
The liquid crystal diodes in the tubes are technically capable of producing an unlimited variety of color, however this often does not come through in LCD and Plasma televisions because the fluorescent lights themselves are not of high enough quality. A backlit LED TV is capable of a much wider and richer range of color, this is where LED style televisions have the edge over Plasma and LED.
LED TVs have two different set-ups when it comes to back-lighting. Some LED TVs have a completely back-light behind the screen while others have them placed around the edges. Both of these set-ups consume less electricity than the fluorescent systems used by LCD and Plasma TVS, but they do have their own draw-backs.
LED TVs with edge lighting are light-weight and thin, but the lights are always on just like fluorescent systems and despite the fact they use diodes to create light the black colors on the screen are still not as deep and rich as backlit LED sets. The backlit models have that sharp, rich black color but they are not as thin as the edge lit models. But when it comes to having to absolute best, sharpest image a backlit LED TV is definitely the way to go. It is the prime choice of many serious TV and movie watching consumers.
