There are times when we visit family we notice that changes are taking place faster than we had ever anticipated. This was such the case on a recent trip to visit an aunt and uncle. Though I had expected to see the graying of hair and the addition of wrinkles, I was not expecting to hear the same stories repeated time and time again or the same questions asked many times in a row. You see, my uncle is loosing his short term memory and he doesn’t remember what he just said or did and repeats these things again and again and it is driving my aunt a little crazy as well as she is with him 24/7!
As I asked her about what was going on she was very open and let me know that he refuses to go see anyone. The bottom line is he is afraid he may be coming down with Alzheimer’s and he would rather not know than face the facts because he watched in horror as one of his relatives dove into the depths of this disease for many years. What he doesn’t realize is there is hope; not for a cure as of yet but for maintaining your life and slowing down the debilitating process of Alzheimer’s. Hopefully, he will soon see the light and get the help he so desperately needs.
